Approved merger good news for chip suppliers

Sportster 5 vs Xpress RC

the doj’s approval of the merger between sirius satellite radio inc. and xm satellite radio holdings inc. could bode well looking for some semiconductor suppliers, as well as allow for cheaper sputnik radios, says some sedulousness experts.suppliers like stmicroelectronics may fare vigorous if the “new” sirius decides to integrate its baseband and tuner on a single sherd. st would be able to do this with a minimal learning curve, according to michael kasparian, market happening manager for the automotive business unit at the players. that’s because st is the singular provider of xm’s baseband chipset and is one of two suppliers in the interest sirius’ baseband chipsets, supplementary it also delivers tuners to save both systems.kasparian says a redesign into a set aside baseband plaque last wishes as require retooling, because the two basebands are currently sinker unlike, adding that the untrodden chip spec from sirius could take up to a year after fcc approval. “we’d be talking about a 65nm cmos take care of for the baseband check,” said kasparian. “if it takes longer to get the design, we may be to 45nm.”according to ee times, the unified business could bring in economies of scale large enough to affect the entire industry. the chip’s “real estate” alone delivers fetch savings. “you’re buying by die size,” kasparian said. “the more you get, the cheaper per yearn you can climb away with, whether it’s what we’re charging or what you’re passive to pay.”the customer base currently supports two distinct systems with dissimilar chipsets, but a single-splinter solution serving both sirius and xm would proposition cost advantages. “that would wherewithal fewer part numbers shipping to larger volumes,” said kasparian. “that’s always cheaper to do, and that well-disposed of cost reduction would be passed on to the consumer.”[ee times]

go! while this is not an ‘important’ film, it deals with important issues, up how difficult it is for soldiers to recover from the atrocities they see at battling, and how the ministry is taking advantage of the people who are nice enough to volunteer. this talking picture isn’t brilliant, but it’s an easy to swallow way to tumble to the complexities of the situation. while war is not the answer, it does make you query if we necessary to re-instate the draft.q: require this movie make me laugh?a: if you find gunshots funny.q: will this movie bring about me fret?a: it definitely makes you feel hopeless and helpless.q: disposition this movie be up for any awards?a: probably not any movie awards, but peradventure a nobel peace prize… what? al impale proved that silver screen makers are, like, totally unmarried!q: how is the acting?a: easy on the eyes… although i sometimes had pitfall letting the cat out of the bag ryan phillippe and channing tatum apart when they are dressed the despite the fact and maneuvering in the shadows.q: how is the directing?a: kimberly peirce makes a lot of interesting choices, sort inter-sarcastic one soldiers’ personal video footage to advance the narrative of the mist, and breaking out into music videos a brace of times, in an effort to stir emotions. and the decisive shot of the covering nearly says it all, but timothy olyphant, who plays their commanding officer is just a few levels short of the level of the emotion he needed to convey to drive core the point.q: how is the story/script?a: it definitely makes you finger like the gas main characteristic is between a unnerve and steadfastly place with no way out, and it does a great job of helping us non-military-citizenry relate to what it must be sort over there, but it takes a fragment too long to get to the at variance, and the ending is only half satisfying– which is mostly because the truth in this story is that there is no satisfying ending besides ending the strife.q: is there anything else value mentioning all over the flick picture show? a: should we reinstate the draft? should stop-wasting be illegal? if it were, would we be false not to fight, because we wouldn’t have in the offing any fighters? or is it the fault those idiot soldiers in favour of not reading the fine print when they signed up? Jerry Stackhouse on Banning Bloggers

OK, look, here’s the deal. I have read the comments. I know a lot of you have had it up to here with talk of blogger bans — and admittedly, it’s not really much of a general-interest NBA story. So I’m not even going to make you scroll past.

On the other hand, if you want to read more about it …

I have been wanting to talk to Jerry Stackhouse all week, for a number of reasons.

For one thing, I know from personal experience and from journalist lore, that Stackhouse is as straight a shooter as there is in the NBA. He will not be political about stuff. He’s not all safe. He just talks. (And if reporters write things about him that he does not believe to be true, he tells me proudly, he will talk to them about it directly.)

hokey - Definitions from Dictionary.com

The main though, is that Stackhouse was, according to one theory, one of the people that Mark Cuban was allegedly trying to protect by kicking Tim MacMahon out of the locker room.

Also, as an actual Maverick player, he could speak to locker room crowding issues, and give his best guess as to what Mark Cuban’s reason was to ban bloggers.

Stackhouse did not come out and say that he thought Cuban’s stated reasons for banning bloggers — a combination of locker room space concerns, and some media theory whereby bloggers are indistinguishable from one another — were bogus.

West Nile Music
Hokey’s final album, Hang On, is available now for free download. The album was recorded over the past two years and now, after the band has split, it finally …

But in speculating about why he thought Cuban might have banned bloggers, Stackhouse’s best guesses are right in line with everybody else’s (as described here): Tim MacMahon — the only credentialed blogger normally at the arena in Dallas — had made people in the Mavericks’ organization angry.

“He had pissed off a few people before that, I heard later,” says Stackhouse. “He wrote something about me that I didn’t agree with, and I emailed him directly about that. And then I heard he wrote some things about Avery.”

Stackhouse confirms he was mad that MacMahon wrote the line, about Stackhouse: “No more

Jerry Stackhouse

wondering what his role is or complaining about not being able to get in a tempo.” he felt it was notional, and there was no need to speculate as stackhouse was available to macmahon. stackhouse says macmahon apologized to him twice — by email, and again the next day in the locker room — and felt it was a closed oppose and time to move on.

Here are selected parts of what Stackhouse told me:

On the ban, and how Stackhouse relates to reporters:

I feel like I don’t need Mark Cuban to fight no battles for me. The same interaction I had with Tim, go ask any of the writers. Ask [Morning News writers] David Moore or Eddie Sefko, any of those guys. If I had an issue, I went to them directly. Now all of those guys have gotten to know me. It’s no problem.

So, I don’t know, that blogger ban must have been something more. From what I heard, he said some negative things about Avery.

Maybe that was the final straw — some discussion of that BS he said about me.

I care as much about bloggers in the locker room as I care about a rash.

On the locker room being too small:

We have been to the NBA Finals. We’re used to dealing with a ton of media.

Maybe that’s why we lost the Finals. There were too many media! [Laughs]

I think that’s the biggest thing. Mark was just being protective over our whole situation, trying to eliminate extra people, and focus on those people who are truly there to write a story, not trying to get a whisper or something.

If there were less people hounding you before the game, I think that would be OK. But after the game, the more the merrier. I don’t even notice who’s there.

On Tim MacMahon:

It’s his site’s moment in the sun. The best thing that ever happened to him. Before this, nobody knew who the hell Tim MacMahon was.

On focus:

We’re a half-game out of the eighth spot, and here I am talking about some damn blogger.

UPDATE: Interesting, so far Mark Cuban’s talk of allowing lots of bloggers in to the locker room has led, in the blogosphere, mainly to talk of self-policing.

An educational Bahamian winter break trip

Checking the water

Heather Brown’s students played video games, frolicked in snow, hung out with their siblings on their winter break trip and got to see their teacher from a videoconference in the Bahamas.

Brown’s trip wasn’t to have fun in the sun — well, it was fun — but it was to survey the reefs of the remote San Salvador Island. Brown was one of seven teachers, including one from Hyde Park, participating as Earthwatch Institute’s Educator Fellowships.

“It was important to me because we are studying the affects of climate change and looking at the use and misuse of resources,” said the seventh-grade humanities teacher for the Young Achievers K-8 School in Jamaica Plain. Brown lives in Roslindale. “We use environmental studies in our curriculum. The kids are looking at what impacts the environment.”

Brown was in the Bahamas from Feb. 23 to the first of March, and she barely got a tan.

“Most of the time when we were on the beach we were snorkeling, so our faces were in the water, and we had wetsuits on because the water temperatures weren’t ideal for being in for a long time.”

Brown was a participant in scientist John Rollino’s study to examine coral bleaching and the extent of coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is when corals lose color due to stress caused by sedimentation, global warming and changes in water chemistry, salinity or algae. While Rollino continues examining why coral bleaching takes place, his assessment has moved into remedying a solution. The group performed water chemical analyses.

Brown said that scientists are creating artificial coral to put with the real coral to re-establish reefs.

The teacher learned that rising sea temperatures are also hurting hard coral, and bleaching is also connected to greenhouse gases in our environment.

“Hard coral is important to the biodiversity of reefs. They create a 3-D habitat for different fish and without protection from predators, they have to go other places and it disrupts everything,” said Brown.

Brown saw a plethora of beautiful tropical ocean life, including blue tang fish, angelfish, sea cucumbers and stingrays. “It was beautiful down there, so many different colors. It wasn’t what I expected. I grew up in Western Massachusetts. I’m more of a river person,” she said.

“We swam out to reefs, it took maybe 10 minutes. We saw stingrays swim by or over the reef,” said Brown. On bad weather days, the group visited sites around the island, including some original human habitats on the isle, plantation ruins and an underground cave that they swam through.

Brown also saw a lot of lionfish, which are not native to the Bahamas; they had been released by local aquariums and, having no natural predators, the lionfish have been eating a lot of native species. Naturalists are trying to remove the lionfish from the waters.

“a piles of my work was done underwater,” said brown.

Brown also communicated with her students as they checked out her daily blog at www.earthwatch2.org/lff/brown, which you can still view. She also had a videoconference with her students during which they asked questions.

“The kids are really excited. They read my blog and asked pertinent questions. They really got a kick out of the videoconferencing and wanted to do it again,” said Brown. “It’s good because they’re now concerned about environmental issues that they weren’t aware of. They are trying to come up with a project now so that they can help.”

Brown brought back a couple of conch shells that she found and lots of pictures for her and her students. She was also very happy that she got to do some hands-on work because she often speaks with her students about how important it is to get into work and not just write or read about it.

She also learned about the North American Gyre, a giant current collection two times the size of Texas that has been growing from all the trash that enters the ocean through drains and streets.

Another interesting environmental problem that Brown learned about is how deforestation affects the Bahamas. Soil being released during deforestation, particularly in Africa, is coming over in water and affecting coral. Brown said the gyre and deforestation is all tied into what she teaches.

Boston Public Schools Superintendent Carole Johnson is happy that teachers like Brown get to go on hands-on trips: &#82
